ATLANTICADE is pleased to announce that the “Portraits of Honour” display will be part of this year’s event and will include a special tribute presentation to members of the three families on Sunday, June 24th at the memorial site at Riverfront Park. The Portraits of Honour was conceived by artist David Sopha in 2008 to recognize the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers who served in the Afghanistan mission. The Cambridge, Ontario resident, an airbrush artistby trade, decided to pick up his brush and create a tribute display and individual paintings of each of the 158 soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. In recent years, Sophia has expanded the Portraits of Honour to include first responders who have been killed in the line of duty. Thus, individual paintings of Constables Dave Ross, Doug Larche and Fabrice Gevaudan will be presented in a brief public ceremony beginning at 1:15 pm on the final day of ATLANTICADE.

A private presentation to the family of Constable Frank DesChenes, who was killed in September of 2017 near Memramcook, will also take place on the opening day of the festival. “We are very pleased to have Dave Sopha attend our event this year and recognize these four heroes in this manner” said festival chairman Dale Hicks. “The Portraits of Honour display was on hand at our event in Summerside back in 2014 when the dedication to the PEI Highway of Heroes was held. We are very humbled to be able to host this tribute again as part of our 2018 festival in Moncton.” The actual wall display, along with special recognition of the 11 soldiers from New Brunswick who lost their lives in Afghanistan, will be on site at Legion Branches in Moncton, Hillsborough and Shediac at various times during the day on Friday, June 22nd. Starting Friday evening it will open for viewing at the Atlanticade / Ribfest grounds during the remainder of the festival weekend.
