Calgary Harley-Davidson Grand Re-Opening Part 2 - An interview with Trevor Madore Featured

Calgary Harley-Davidson Grand Re-Opening Part 2 - An interview with Trevor Madore Calgary Harley-Davidson Grand Re-Opening Part 2 - An interview with Trevor Madore

Calgary Harley DavidsonSix years ago Gary Sartorio purchased the Calgary Harley-Davidson dealership from the Wild family.

Gary is the president of Shaganappi Automotive and was born into a family owned automotive business. This has become a trend in Canada, that automotive dealerships and consortias across the country are buying up Harley-Davidson dealerships.

Calgary Harley-Davidson became another of those buyouts. The move by automotive dealerships to run Harley-Davidson dealerships has been a great thing for the industry on many levels. Training and skills are more of a focus now than ever before in Harley-Davidson dealerships that are run by automotive dealers.

The key in any buyout and transformation is to find the right person to take the helm, Gary was that person in the beginning! Gary had a team that had won Platinum Bar & Shield Awards back to back. Gary’s leadership had that team just rocking and then some dynamics changed and Gary was needed elsewhere within the family company. He knew that the team needed a strong and committed leader and Gary knew that Trevor was the right person for this job.

Gary Sartorio had been attempting to get Trevor Madore to work for him for a while when finally Trevor and his wife had a discussion based on the fact that they were about to become parents. Trevor didn’t want to be on the road even though he loved his job travelling around the world for Imperial Oil and the substantial wage that it brought with it. Being a Dad who is present in his kid’s life is important to him.’

After a discussion between Gary and Trevor, Trevor became the General Manager of Calgary Harley-Davidson.

In the last two years since Trevor took the helm, a lot has changed in the dealership. Trevor’s oilfield background paved the way for empowering and growing his team. Trevor expressed to me in a recent telephone interview that educating and empowering your people are two of the most critical things any “leader” can do if he wants the business he leads to be a success.

“Train them to take over your job and you will always get the best out of your team,” that’s Trevor’s mantra.

It’s a simple concept really when you think about it, everyone wants to be able to grow and excel in their jobs and if you give them the room and tools to grow with the whole team flourishes. Under Trevor’s leadership, the team is tight like a well oiled machine. It is why Gary Sartorio hired Trevor in the first place, his talent for pulling the best out of people.

The original plan for the dealership when Gary bought it was to build a new one, but then the economy started to shift and wisely Gary decided that a really magnificent renovation would suffice. The building needed some major upgrades to infrastructure. Trevor worked closely with Gary and the vision for a reimagined dealership became clear.

The dealership which is 46,000 square feet has been overhauled from front to back and it is as magnificent as Trevor imagined it would be. An old file room and storage room were turned into a barber shop and a tattoo studio, making cooling your heels while you wait for your motorcycle to come out of the quick lane service a whole lot more rewarding.

The dealership is beautiful, open and inviting. The creativity in the shop has also skyrocketed and the dealership just won the Canadian National Title for the Battle of the Kings and they now get to compete on the world stage.

For those who don’t know what the Battle of the Kings is: Battle of the Kings is a Harley-Davidson custom competition featuring the very best Custom Kings from across the globe. Their challenge is to take our standard Harley-Davidson model and turn it into something unique. Over 200 dealers from more than 30 countries will compete to create bespoke, ground-breaking Harleys, using only their imagination, skill and a budget no bigger than half the cost of the original model.

Trevor Madore is proud of the team that he and Gary have groomed. The dealership he leads is growing by leaps and bounds and service for riders in the Calgary area, and those travelling through the province is better for it. The team takes pride in what they do and it really does show.
