Post Cards From a Lone Rider

columnist Eoin KennyI don’t know when I first caught the motorcycle bug. Probably in the early ‘60s when I was just a kid.

O Canada, eh?!

columnist Eoin KennyShare this with fellow Canadians who need a laugh and foreigners who can learna thing or two about Canada and then enjoy a good chuckle. Let's face it: We Canadians are a rare breed.

Heading East from Tofino

columnist Eoin KennyNANAIMO – I’ve made the turn in Tofino and Newfoundland is now at least a few kilometers closer than it was last night.

Heading down to Owen Sound

EK owen sound1OWEN SOUND -- Take a map of Ontario. locate this town on beautiful Georgian Bay, on the easterly shore of Lake Huron. Now rotate the map 90 degrees clockwise so that west is at the top and, with very little imagination, you’ll see why it’s known as The Elephant’s Bum! (Or words to that effect!)

the greatest of the Great LakesSAULT STE. MARIE -- On a plaque overlooking spectacularly beautiful Agawa Bay, it says Lake Superior is so large and deep and dangerous, it makes its own weather!

Making music in the mountains

columnist Eoin KennyCALGARY -- After a warm, sunny weekend in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Canmore and a too-short visit with my honey, I awoke to pouring rain and single-digit temperatures. I know which single digit I’d like to give Ma Nature! It’s June, for crying out loud!

columnist Eoin KennyI expect over the next three or four months of riding across Canada I'll hit all four seasons, prossibly -- even probably -- more than once! But short of a blizzard, I'll have to keep going.

Edmonton - Jasper - Clearwater

columnist Eoin KennyCLEARWATER, B.C. -- The first two day's rides are over and I’m about to hit the showers at the comfortable Ace Western Motel. I’ve put 735 kilometers (417, Edmonton-Jasper; 328, Jasper-Clearwater) on The Bike-A-Lounger since leaving the Alberta Legislature (where we had to sneak pictures from a back lawn because the ever-more-paranoid government and their officious provincial police force refused to allow us access to the Ledge grounds. So much for it being a place of the people!!)

Vancouver Island Time

Calgary, cowboys and more music

Calgary, cowboys and more musicFORT MacLEOD, AB -- I laid up in Calgary for three days with my friend Mark, a former Public Affairs Bureau colleague now working in corporate communications in Calgary. I fear the cold I picked up riding over the Coquihalla Summit in near-zero temps is only just starting to take hold. Achoo, snork!

Photographs and memories in the Okanagan Valley

Eoin Kenny Okanagan ValleyCANMORE, AB -- Mindy’s coming today! In nearly 21 years, we’ve never been apart this long, nearly 21 days! Never mind breakdowns, uncaring dealerships or even the two days of near-freezing rain high in the Rocky Mountains that I had to drive through to get here. In a matter of hours, the love of my life will soon be here.

Cobourg to Kingston

Cobourg to KingstonKINGSTON -- Leaving Cobourg behind, I once again headed up through the Northumberland hills around the eastern end of Rice Lake.

Farewell to Nova Scotia -- for now

Nova ScotiaDIGBY – Time to say farewell to Nova Scotia, but not before I heave sigh or a wish to return to some great motorcycle roads along its rocky South Shore!

From salt to salt at last!

Salt to Salt

HALIFAX -- One rider, two wheels, four cylinders, six time zones, 10 provinces (but only nine pictures of the Beemer in front of legislature buildings), 96 days on the road and 16,096 kilometers equals one helluva ride!
I spent almost a week in St. John’s, NL, with my friends Vaughn and Elaine, soaking up the sights and sounds of this busy Atlantic seaport.

Jigging for cod in Garden Cove

EK Garden Grove1GARDEN COVE – If a bad day fishing beats a good day in the office, then three great days jigging for cod on Newfoundland’s Placentia Bay with my buddy Vaughn has got to be one of most fun things I’ve ever done! It will certainly be a highlight of a trip that features new adventures around every curve!

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 06:00

Completing the circle in Newfoundland

Eoin KennyST. ANTHONY – I’ve made it to Newfoundland and Labrador! I’ve now reached my 10th and last Canadian province and were the trip to end today, I could honestly say I’ve seen a good bit of Canada from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic!

Cabot TrailBADDECK – Until you’ve ridden the Cabot Trail, you can’t say you’ve ridden all the world’s great motorcycle roads!

It’s a 300-kilometer thrill ride with enough twists and turns to suit any experienced rider as it rises steeply enough to pop your eardrums and drops fast enough to leave your stomach up around your ears.

Wednesday, 06 August 2014 06:00

Taking some time out in the Maritimes

MaritimesCHARLOTTETOWN -- I can’t help thinking I’ve been giving the Maritimes short shrift.

After perhaps the worst meal of my trip, an unfunny and nearly inedible comedy of errors at Station 127 in Edmundston, New Brunswick -- I roared off down the four-lane Trans-Canada bound for Fredericton, the provincial capital.

Thursday, 31 July 2014 06:00

A whale of a time in Tadoussac

EK Tadoussac1TADOUSSAC – Je voudrais revenir a Tadoussac juste pour la nourriture!

I want to return to this tourist village at the mouth of the Saguenay River that is the capital of the Quebec whale-watching industry. Didn’t see many whales on a three-hour cruise the other day, but I did spend the weekend in grat restaurants like La Gallouine and Café Boheme eating some of the best meals I’ve had since leaving home nearly 11 weeks ago.

Emotions run high in Quebec

columnist Eoin KennyQUEBEC CITY - After three days here in the provincial capital, I more fervently believe that my Canada includes Quebec and both the country and the province would be diminished by any form of separation. Our history, our culture, our very identity as a nation are so intertwined, it would be impossible to wrest one from the other without destroying both!

Je roule en la belle province!

columnist Eoin KennyMONTREAL – I first started taking French lessons in Grade 6 when I was about 11. In my head, I speak a pretty passable, if somewhat fractured, version of Canada’s other official language. Trouble is, it doesn’t always come out that way!

And I sure can’t comprehend it as fast as it’s spoken here in what used to be called la belle province. But I have to try if I want to get around for the next couple of weeks.
