A trip to Langley to honour Canada’s Afghanistan soldiers Featured

Langley Canada Afghanistan soldiers5On Saturday, the 9th of June, some 30 motorcycle riders travelled to Langley's Afghanistan Memorial for an annual Memorial Ride for the Fallen – To honour Canada’s troops who have died on active duty or whose consequent death was attributed to such duty in Afghanistan.
The memorial monument is located at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum and a Walk to Remember follows a path of 158 trees each planted in memory of a dead soldier.  Canadian flags also lined the walkway for the ceremony.

The inception and organization of this Memorial Ride has been carried out by the 3rd Canadian Army Veterans (CAV) for some eight years.  The 3rd CAV was also responsible for having a portion of Highway 1 in Langley designated the Highway of Heroes in 2011 – This dedication of highway sections has since spread across Canada.

The event of Saturday past was to show bereaved families that the sacrifices of their loved ones while serving our country has not been forgotten.  The five local Silver Cross families attended and each laid a Poppy wreath at the Monument as did various British Columbia civic organizations.  Members of the CAV formally marched as an honour guard and brought along both a Piper and a Bugler.

What struck one most about the ceremony was the personal warmth that the CAV displayed for these families and the reciprocal affection that the bereaved folks have for the CAV.  During a BBQ meal held later at one of the family homes this close connection was further demonstrated along with a unique kinship that the families themselves now have for each other.  They know that they are NOT alone and that their sacrifice has NOT been forgotten.

The Canadian Army Veterans are to be soundly congratulated for this 'right thing to do' effort as well as the determination to carry it forward each year.
Bravo Zulu!
