Share The Road

amss May is Motorcycle Awareness month.  May 2, 2017 was the official launch of the multi-media motorcycle awareness campaign held by AMSS.

With rider participation doubling from last year, nearly overflowing the allowed space.  There were bikes and riders from all walks of life, make and model to help make this day a success.

A clean sweep was done in Edmonton by the AMSS (Alberta Motorcycle Safety Society) which means that all their messaging will be on radio, TV, print and their new electronic billboards.  They will be making their way to Calgary for the clean sweep there.

Councillor Loken of Edmonton showed up to deliver the Proclamation even though there was a important debate going on elsewhere.

RCMP Corporal Johannson from the K Divisions motorcycle unit participated and is now their newest teammate.  This helps show unity for safer roads, and betters the relationships between Police and the rider.

Motorcycle Awareness is not just about seeing the rider and bike, you actually need to be aware of his/her presence. Not all bikes are loud enough to catch your attention.  Check your mirrors often, look around, give them room as they are not able to stop as fast as a four wheeled vehicle.  Don’t flick cigarette buts out your vehicle windows as they could land in the lap of a rider/biker.  Please be aware!!!!!

Motorcyclists need to do their part as well.  Make sure you are seen.  Don’t ride in blind spots, gravel is not your friend-street sweepers are.  Wear something reflective for night riding, make sure all your signals, brake lights, and head light are in working order.  Check tire pressure often.  Don’t rush, enjoy the ride.  Life is not a race, that is one finish line we shouldn’t be in a hurry to get to, ride within your limits.

Don’t forget that once spring hits, and you are wanting to buy a motorcycle please take a course first to establish if it’s right for you.
