The Harley-Davidson Story: Tales from the Archives - Out next month!

motorbooksCreated in cooperation with the Harley-Davidson Museum, comes a rich story telling the success of the most iconic motorcycle company as it began in a small shed in 1903.

The Harley-Davidson Company started as many other impressive companies do—the right idea at the right time. However, unlike most companies, this company managed to plow through the competition. For fans of history, business, and motorcycles alike, this new book will please the eyes and minds of those interested in the origins of a company that remains king to the competition.

A tribute to an American bred company that managed to make its way to the top is The Harley-Davidson Story: Tales from the Archives, by Aaron Frank (Motorbooks, November 13, 2018).  This classic tale of spirit, invention, and persistence is presented as an overview of the company’s history with gripping images for an easy and entertaining read. Aaron Frank guides his readers from the very beginning to tell how William Harley and his cousins, the Davidson brothers, took the means to put their humble idea to work. Starting in a small shed in Milwaukee in 1903, these three men had no reason to believe they would start the world’s most iconic motorcycle company—until it happened. Blazing through competition that seemed to rise and fall during the 1920s, the Harley company continued to stand tall. Whether it was introducing its first V-twin motor or dominating race tracks across America, Harley and the Davidson brothers fed off innovation. In fact, The Milwaukee Miracle even gained momentum during WWII as they built war bikes for the armed forces. By the 1950s, the men buried their last American-built competitor and took hold of the US market, which they still maintain today.

The Harley-Davidson Story is a remarkable piece that engages audiences in the rich history of a well-respected American company. As told through Harley’s museum collection, which opened in 2009, the book tells its incredible tale through the museum’s displays and archive assets.  Furthermore, Harley-Davidson is Motorbooks’ best-selling motorcycle subject and a top-3 subject overall. Like the last Motorbooks story published in partnership with Harley-Davidson’s museum, that being the largely successful Harley-Davidson Archive Collection, this book is backed by the museum’s credibility. Specifically, the book is officially licensed with Harley Davidson and carries the Museum’s seal, making it a beautiful piece for Harley-Davidson fans and collectors.

Readers will love to explore the history and visuals that work harmoniously to illustrate one of the greatest motorcycle stories. As a true story that proves intelligence, spirit, and innovation, this visually driven piece will both educate and amaze anyone who can recognize the iconic Harley-Davidson logo.

Aaron Frank is a Milwaukee-based writer and former staffer at Motorcyclist magazine. He is known for his insightful and clear writing.  Frank has ridden—and written about—everything from 200-horsepower superbikes to 200-plus-mph land-speed racers to 12-foot-long choppers to century-old antique bikes. He’s ridden racebikes around Daytona, dirtbikes down the length of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, adventure bikes over the Alps, and even ice raced motorcycles on frozen lakes—though he’d really rather be tooling around his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his two daughters, Kiva and Ruby, in their vintage BMW Airhead sidecar.
