Freedom

columnist bad uncle monkeyIt is a hard concept to really, truly wrap your mind around. We here in the west are quick to pound our chest and proclaim that we are the proud and free. The sad thing is freedom is a mirage lingering on the horizon. For many of us we work an honest day work, ride our bikes in the mean time, we complain about politics to our friends but we never really do anything about it other than some grumbles. We could be plopped down in any part of the world and our lives would change very little. That is not freedom - only the allusion of freedom.

The Monkey Report May 1, 2014

columnist bad uncle monkey"I can't sell you that." I dismissed the salesman’s statement as fast as he had said it. My trip to the dealership was simply to price out some parts so I could budget them for the King build. As we talked it was becoming clear what he meant by he couldn't sell me the parts. You would think that it would be a supply and demand thing that Harley simply didn't produce enough of the parts and now there was a shortage somewhere in the pipe line. Maybe the part was simply obsolete or just not available just yet as a replacement part but as we talked looking at the schematics on the screen there was a part number, price and even listed the part being in stock in his own inventory.

The Danger of Doing Nothing

R.A.G.E.You’ve no doubt heard the story of the frog in boiling water.  If you drop a frog into boiling water, it immediately jumps out (or so the story goes).  However, if you put a frog in a pot of room-temperature water, and then bring the water to a boil very, very slowly, the frog will stay in the water until it dies.  It’s an odd experiment that seems eerily similar to what we are experiencing with our private vehicle insurance rates in Saskatchewan.

Sometimes we over think things

bad Uncle MonkeySometimes we over think things. We lose the big picture trying to fill in all the little details missing what is right before us. I was recently talking with someone who was looking to build a simple bobber project. His requirements were pretty broad - air cooled V-twin with a chain.

The Monkey Report April 3rd, 2014

bad Uncle MonkeyMy friend was down this weekend. As we waited in my garage for a young gentleman to look at Mrs. Monkey old bike he asked this and that about my bikes. I told him about my plans for the missus's new HondaMatic, how it worked, how it would look when it was done. I talked endlessly about the RoadKing explaining how the parts fit together, what my hopes and dreams would be for the bike when it was finished. We talked about Snow White and how much I was looking forward to getting her back on the road in the upcoming weeks.

The Monkey Report March 13th, 2014

bad Uncle MonkeySpinning wrenches on bikes is therapy right up there with rolling on the miles across this great country. We all like to tinker with our bikes making them faster, making them prettier, making sure everything is as perfect as possible. The previous owner had assure Mrs. Monkey the HondaMatic had spent the last ten years under a cover in a shed but it obviously spent the majority of its life out in the elements.
