The Far East

By Debby Lake

I don’t know what part of the country you are sitting in while reading this, but I am writing it from Canada’s far east – Newfoundland - and while normally I love my province I am pretty fed up with it right now!  I am fed up with snow and winter and it’s time for it to be over!

The winter of 2000 – 2001 was a brutal winter here; we had over 680cms of snow, that’s more than 21 feet and from Jan through April we couldn’t see the roof of the house across the street from us.  That’s a lot of snow and a lot of sore backs, arms and short tempers!

I figured if I made it through that winter without killing myself or someone else I would be able to handle any winter.  Skip ahead to 2014; we have had 435cms of so far and with more forecast for next week,  I am just about at the end of my tether and ready to completely snap!

Let me make one thing completely clear, I hate winter!  I always have, but I was born here, I’ve lived here pretty much my whole life, I am used to winter, I am used to snow, I am used to less than stellar weather.  It doesn’t mean I like it, it doesn’t make me a winter person but I certainly know that from November to May I can expect cold, snow, freezing rain followed by June to October that offers up the occasionally sunny day!  So I don’t know why this winter has me ready to pack up everything and head to a place where snow is some sort of romantic notion!

Maybe I can’t “handle” winter like I used to because I’ve gotten older and my patience level seems to diminish with each candle that gets added to my birthday cake or maybe the difference is I got my motorcycle license 6 years ago and ever since then winter has become less of an annoyance and more and more unbearable but this winter has been the worst.

While I sit here looking at the remnants of 14 feet of snow, mounds of salt on the road and dreading the next dumping that is scheduled to hit I keep trying to convince myself that spring, or Newfoundland’s version of it anyway, is just around the corner and my motorcycle will soon be out of storage and on the road but it gets harder and harder to convince myself when the weatherman is still talking snow storms… so I guess I’m going to have stop watching the weather reports!  That’s it!  Ignore it and it’ll go away!!

So to those of you who are firing up the bikes and hitting the road, say a prayer for those of us down here in the frozen far east!
