Nothing happens for no reason

Written by David Pocock

Columnist David PocockThe saying goes that, “Nothing happens for no reason.”  I had a real life example of this I’d like to share with you folk.  As some of you know, Southern Alberta is coming out of winter in fits and starts, and today was warm enough that the ice in the ally behind my garage had melted enough that I could safely ride out to the street.

So after a quick set of equipment checks, (you do check your tires, signals and lights before you ride, don’t you?) I set out to blow a bit of air through the cooling fins of the engine on my bike and rode from my small town to the next one to the West and stopped at a Tim Horton’s for a snack and to warm up my hands, it wasn’t quite THAT warm, where I happened to meet a service dog and his charge.

After the usual greeting and compliments on the service dog, which is for sight aid, I was talking with Mel Foat and found out that he was one of the 1 in 1 with lots of 0's behind it, folk who’s had a problem develop from cataract surgery which left him mostly blind and losing one eye, not just due to the surgery, but a nasty virus that infected first his left, then his right eye, resulting in the loss of his left eye and most of the retina in his right eye.

Mel was very positive and shared the following, early in the process as he was loosing his left eye he made a conscious decision, he could either take the “OH poor pitiful me, I’m so hard done by” route or, he could deal with it in a positive “all right I’m here and I’m alive and that is a good thing” route.  Mel took the positive route and therein lies the lesson for us all.  This man used to manage a large farm just West of Calgary for a client, the home farm as well, and, oh yeah; he rode a bike with “just a bunch of other farmers”.  His wife and he had the usual roles laid out where he brought in the money for the house and she helped out and controlled the spending, now they have reversed those roles.  Back in the beginning Mel and his wife made a pact that they would see this through with as much positive as possible, and, you know, from that short meeting in Tim’s, I do believe they are doing just exactly that.

Mel goes to schools and other groups to tell the tale of his trip, loosing his sight, getting his service dog and the trials that he gets to face with the message that truly there are but two choices in life, be as positive and up beat as you can or huddle in misery and be a drag on folk.

So, for me the real reason I went for a ride was to meet these two nice folk and relearn that life IS in fact good!  A heart felt “Thank You, Mel” from me.
